I thought of this after reading below how glycerin and Preservit will stain driftwood. (Which is true!)

Folks, if you are mounting the bird directly to the piece of wood that will eventually be its permanent base, take a moment to cover the wood with plastic wrap or waxed paper before you attach the mount. That way, anything that might leak out of the feet will not cause any trouble, and you might even be able to paint the feet without ever removing it, depending on the pose and etc. The plastic wrap can easily be torn away from around the feet when the mount is finished.

Sometimes, depending on position I may decide to put the fish on it's final base (driftwood usually) BEFORE any finish work including painting. Then I simply wrap the driftwood in saran wrap so not to get paint on the wood...
