I have a coustomer that has not come to pick up his mount for over a year now. I have talked with this man several times over the year and he says he is going to pick it up that week and never does. I am preparing a letter to be hand delivered to him letting him know he has one week to pick up mount or he gives mount to me to be sold. Is there any leagel things I need to remember in this letter to protect myself? Thank you in advance and God bless

...you might want to have someone proof read it for spelling! To the point, make sure your letter follows whats printed on your invoice/contract he signed. Also, check with your local law to see what they may or may not allow, in case it goes to court. If its a migratory bird, you cant sell it...period. Working with the individual, like you did, is always the best bet...if he reciprocates! Good luck to you.
I have had the same experience and posted a similar question several weeks back. The biggest problem is that you cannot sell a migratory bird. The best suggestion I have is to send your customer a certified letter stating that after a certain date you will be placing his bird on display at a local sporting goods store (at least this might earn you some future buisness). The other suggestion is to get more deposit up front, and have yoru customers sign a form when they drop off their birds that includes a "storage" clause that state they are liable for a $5/day storage fee if a bird is left more than 2 weeks after you have informed them that it is complete. If they no this up front, they might be more inclied to come pick it up. Just some food for thought.
I guess the other thing you could do if you use fake heads and bodies, is to tell them in the letter that you will be destroying the bird on a certain date to recycle some of the parts.
Good Luck.

but keep in mind, that some birds can NOT be sold...this includes many different types of ducks, woodcocks, crows etc...It is illegal to sell these birds even when the customer doesn't pay up...many taxidermists insist on a 100% deposit with migratory birds to prevent this exact situation...
Good luck

Check your state game laws on taxidermy. In Pa we have to send a certified letter and give (I think it's) 30 days after receipt of the letter to be able to sell.
Just double check w/ your local WCO.
Thanks for all the suggestions. To let you know it is a wild turkey that we are talking about and it is legal to sell per the local game warden here in Tennessee. I did get a deposit so I am not out of any money just my time, but my time is more important to me than the money. Men of today lack integerity and it is a shame we have to put such disclaimers on our forms to protect us. What ever happened to the days when a man's word and a hand shake was all it took? What kind of men are we raising these days? OK I feel better now. Thank you all for your help and God bless. Bill, how do we get spell check on this site? Or do we have it? Ha, Ha
