fleshers

When I flesh my ducks with a wire wheel I tend to burn through the skin...I'm looking for a better way to flesh waterfowl, not easier just better.

You just have to learn.

It just takes time to learn the technique. Danny Owens I have seen use 2 wire wheels on the arbor of the flesher and says it cuts down burn through. I have not tried this myself so I am not sure. But it is worth a try. Check out the fleshers and equipment in the Van Dykes catalog. I think that is where I saw this info.

I've been told that some guys will invert their duck skin over a duck manikin of the relative same size of the duck they want to flesh. Also thought a small nerf basketball would work as well. Try not to stretch the skin too much, but instead scrunch the skin you want to flesh, this pocket you'll create acts as a buffer and "gives" a little easier, instead of burning through. I hope this helps, kind of hard to explain over this forum, would love to show you my technique, but all in all practice makes perfect. good luck!

be sure that

that you are using a soft wire wheel. That was my problem also, I also use two wheels, I still get a few burns but its usually when i get careless. Hope this helped
