Light reflections and pigment

It's a pigment in the feathers that refracts and reflects light out. An interesting thing about blue in feathers is that it is not a physically stable pigment. If the feather is subjected to too much damage, the refraction ceases and doesn't show as the same sort of blue. I read this once where if you step on a blue jay feather, it won't look blue any more. I tried it on the next blue jay feather I found and sure enough, after crumpling it up, the blue ended up lookin just like a dull gray. Kinda neat...
