how do i get a permit?

hey, i live in the state of ohio and am interested in stuffing birds, ive already done several mammals, but i understand a permit is necessary for birds. how do i go about getting one?help would eb greatly appreciated, i dont want to break any laws, and i dont kill the birds, i find them dead? what do i do?

Permit to do migratory birds for others

You need a permit from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife service (www.permits.fws.gov/) if you are going to mount migratory birds for someone else. The web address should get you started. The permit fee was at $25 but they are thinking of moving it up to $100. You should also check with the state of Ohio to see what regulations they may have for migratory bird taxidermy and the collection of migratory birds. Where I am at you can not mount and sell a migratory bird you found dead. Also an additional State license is not required but there is State paperwork that must be filled out on all birds and kept for 5 years.

If you plan on mounting just for yourself , then you don't need a permit . As for picking up dead birds from the road, 90% will be illegal to possess . You're only allowed to have a bird that can be hunted , i.e. , ducks , pheasants, etc. Rick
