Dispatching live pheasant?

Submitted by Lou on 9/20/04 at 9:13 AM. ( ljabellman@hotmail.com ) 207.199.2.34

I'm going to purchase a few live pheasants from an auction. I want to dispatch them when I get home, but I don't know the best way since I want to eat and mount them as well. I thought about bleeding them out, but the would entail a cut. Any ideas?

Stephan Savides uses electricity, which he says is the most humane way and you can still eat the meat. The details are in the archives as well. In case you are new here the archives can be accessed with the orange search button.

Hold them by the base of the wings and grab their legs. Put them on the ground and put your knee on the side of the cest under the wing bone and press. It puts them down in about 25-40 seconds usually.

I grab em with both my thmbs on the back, and my finger gripping the underside, on the breatbone or keel. Then squeeeeeze. They nod right off. Just make sure you sqeezed em long enough, so they dont wake up in your truck! Similar to the kneeling method described above.
