Absolutely NOT

Any responsible taxidermist will NOT return any meat to you. Maybe YOU personally wouldn't have a problem, but just for giggles, say you came down with ptomaine poisoning. First thing happens is a lawyer is involved and now the taxidermist is sued for giving you meat from (1) a non approved FDA butcher facility and (2)a tainted source. That applies to birds, fish or any other critter I take into my shop. You are given one of two choices. You can eat it OR you can mount it. There are no combinations of those two given.

Theres guys around me who do it, fish, turkeys, geese! Those are the species most likely to have problems too. Theres no way in hell, and Ive been criticized for it. If the studio was a certified inspected meat facility that might be a different situation, but Id guess that they would not pass inspection with that set up either. If the powers-that-be wont pass it, why would you?

Not Legal

In Minnesota it's not legal. You would have to be licensed and inspected for food processing. My taxidermy shop wouldn't pass because of the chemicals on site.

Thanks

Ok thanks, seems like an awful waste of food but I guess it's a trade off.

Can't blame us for that

I always cringe when I hear that remark, "Seems like a terrible waste of meat". It's not MY fault. The customer always has the option of doing the mount himself or for skinning it prior to bringing it to me, but then he also takes the responsiblity of having screwed it up for a mount as well.

Not wasted meat hear !

I can tell if its still good when I skin the birds, slice the breast out , and freeze it all. Makes awsome summer sausage.Freshly killed deer and elk too. Neck meat makes good pepperoni too ! For me though, can't give it or sell it back to the customers. Tim

"The Meat"

This response submitted by Mark on 9/21/04 at 9:37 PM. ( mtmmvruno@lakeland.ws ) 64.33.152.6

I had a customer bring in a bear for a rug mount the other day wanted to know if he could have the trimmings off the hide. I asked if he was going to render for oil? He says no I want to use it for sausage. I say are you serious? Oh man I almost busted out laughing at him. I wasn't aware that it was illegal in Minnesota thanks for the info not that I would anyway a friend of mine was sued for a customer getting sick off a walleye. I don't even give the skulls back for bears anymore get sick of storing them for people I instead charge for giving them back the skull. This way they say no pitch it and thats exactly what I do with them. People want every darn parts its sickening. Good luck,Mark
