and it looks more dead now than when i killed it... it was a small dove sized bird are these hard to learn on? there were so many feathers on my workbench, is this normal for birds? i have 2 wood ducks in the freeze but i wanted some practice first. is a duck a whole lot easier than a small bird? thanks

Ross , you just practiced on one of the hardest birds to mount . Even people with years of experance will still have feathers all over doing a dove . Try with a larger bird like a pigeon as ducks are very fatty and you'll end up tearing the skin apart trying to remove all the fat and this might make you get so pissed you wont want to do taxidermy any more . Maybe someone on here can donate some birds to you . Why dont you call a local taxidermist and see if they have any extra birds in the freezer they want to get rid of since hunting season is coming and we all need to make room now . Good luck .Rick

Save the woody for a while

Save that woody for a while they can be fatty and very thinned skinned. Try a pheasant they are pretty easy. If you cant find one I have a game farm by me that I work with and I could get you a frozen one or I could skin one for you and send you the hide.
