Grouse mounting question!

Submitted by Derek Mynear on 10/14/04 at 1:05 AM. ( ) 67.171.205.26

Okay....so I have my ruffy skinned, fleshed, washed and ready to mount. Do I have to remove the legs and set them first separately? I have them still attached after skinning but the tarsus is mostly feathered and i'm not sure how or where to cut them off to set them in the form. I plan on doing a standing mount but just not sure if I have to remove the legs and preserve/wire them separately and then put the mounted body onto the legs. I'm very new at this and have heard conflicting information on how to do legs. Some say leave them attached, others tell me to remove them entirely but if so, WHERE do I cut them off at?

Thanks,

Derek

Leave them attached.

I remove the legs on very large birds but never on a bird this size. I suggest you also buy a book or a video, however, a grouse is a good beginners object, hope itīs not full of pin feathers. Have fun /B S

There is no need to remove them

Why go to the trouble to remove them. Wire them like your instructions say and then secure to the body. You do have some sort of instructions don't you?

leave thigh and drum stick

YOU should use both to get a more natural pose. If using a mannikin that has the thighs on it-carve them off.or wrap a body. Good luck. Bird
