Need to know what type of thread to use to sew up waterfowl.I get confused when looking in a taxidermy catalogue. I don't use waxed thread do I? I have WASCO, Research,Van Dykes books. Any recommendation on where to buy wire for wings.Seems like it would cost alot to ship it if it is ordered from one of these books...

Thread and Wire

I use a Dacron upholstery thread to sew my waterfowl. You can get it at fabric stores. Wal-Mart might have it. It is about the same size as regular cotton sewing thread. You just want something thats thin and relatively strong. As far as wire, if you plan on doing 1 bird, go to Lowe's and buy yourself some wire. They sell different guages on rolls in the hardware dept. Otherwise, order some wire. Also, if they throw it in with other large items it won't cost extra to ship because you are paying by size not weight at that point.

I don't know what type of thread I use. It's in a shoe box that I found under my mothers bed a good 20 years ago. There are probalby 100 different rolls all differnt colors. Works fine.

For most bird work.. you should be able to get away with a spool of 14 gu electric fence wire that you can get at Home depot, Lowes, tactor supply... etc etc.
I usually keep
14 gu
12 gu
9 gu
18gu
28 gu
all these handy
the 18 and 28 are floral wire
the 12 and 9 are fencing wire bought at the same place as the elcetric fence wire. I have never ordered wire from a supplier.

I use waxed dental floss. Your dentist will give you all you want with his samples. Works great! I have been using it for 20 years.
