I recenlty watched a video by Van Dykes on mounting a flying pheasant. He used Jewelers cloth (?) to wrap over the bird body, neck, and the ends of the wings and legs. Am I correct with this? I really couldn't understand exactly what he was saying and I can't find it in any catalogs. Where could I find this? Are there other things to use? Thank you!

Ryan , Van Dykes sells this as excelsior or / and wood wool . They have two different kinds , one is course and the other fine . Buy both . A small weight of this is a large box so dont over buy . It will last a long time . Why arent you using foam bird bodies instead ? Wrapping is an older method but I still use it sometimes with smaller mammals . Rick
Several advantages in fact.
1. Super low cost.
2. You never have to wait on a "Foam" body
3. Tow and Wood wool will soak up grease.
(Foam may cause it to bleed grease)
4. Bird body flex and you can bend the wrapped body to suite your
mount.
So wrapping is not outdated and can help you out.
I have a foam body for it, I have a few other birds I don't want to order bodies for. Thank you for the replies!
Wrapping bodys have great advantages....they soak up grease,if you have grease still in the skin your already doing someting wrong. They flex,so you can get that nice wobbley, floppy, unstable look to your mount. The shape of the mount it built-in durring the assembley process, not by mushing it around after it's done.learn to modify foam bodies and your will never wrap again.
