why do they call it a ring neck

Just got in a ring necked drake yesterday and wondered why they call it a ring neck when the ring is actually on the bill.Funny

The ring neck duck actually has a brown ring around the neck. If you need proof e-mail me and I'll show you a pic showing the brown ring on the neck. It has nothing tp do with the bill

The ring-necked duck is named because of a chestnut colored ring around the base of the black neck, like 'yote said. The little river diver's scientific name, Aythya collaris, comes from the Latin collum (neck), which is reference to the neck ring. There are a lot of local names, some of which are above.
