I'll be trying my hand at mounting a Cardinal in a couple of days and I'm a bit concerned that I won't be able to get a heavy enough wire in those small legs to hold it up. Any pointers for dealing with birds that size and keeping them stable?

Don't get caught mounting a cardinal. The bird is a protected species.
Coyote
18 guage floral wire works well for birds that size. It is a good idea to pre-"drill" the leg wire hole IN THE LEG by running a needle through the leg first before you try putting the wire through it. Sometimes the wire is too soft to push through without predrilling the hole.
Good Luck, I have about four of them to do in the near future.
Remember though, Coyote is correct, in the US, they are illegal to mount unless you have the proper permits.
