Recently, I made a really cool "hawk recreation" out of a gamefarm pheasant. Anyway, I called the Maryland DNR and asked if it is legal for me to sell my own mounted pheasant. They said No, even though I bought the bird from a gamefarm. My question is, how do all these people on e-bay sell mounted pheasants? They take gamefarm birds, mount them and sell them, but for some reason in Maryland I can't do it. Can anybody here help me figure this out, because the DNR is not helping! Thanks!

Also, in the Cabella's magazine, they sell lamps with mounted quail inside. Where and how can I get birds that are legal to sell to the public?
Becky , that info they gave you doesnt sound correct . A pheasant isnt native to the USA so it shouldnt have anything to do with the laws here plus its from a game farm . Maybe you told them you have a hawk creation and this threw them off since hawks are illegal . Rick
A Blue State. California is really bad too, but we can sell pen raised birds.

As a taxidermist in Maryland , I can tell you yhat there are a lot of rules. Federal Law does not allow migratory birds to be sold. upland and mammals are fair game . Cant sell tigers either. contact Mary Goldie @ the annapolis DNR headquarters and ask for the section# for all the rules on hunting taxidermy etc.. and then go to the library and check it out for yourself. the officer you spoke to may not of known the specifics on the law ,( Migratory v. upland)
Good luck
I'm a stickler for details and facts. I'm pretty closer with 1 DEC CO, so when I need proof on an issue, I have him look it up. He's even told me he doesn't know it all, and sometimes makes decisions/calls by using common sense and good judgment and not the precise law, but he's never wrong (Is his followup LMAO). So I'd clarify your intentions to him or that other DNR person, and if it's not the answer you want to hear, have them point it out in their DNR penal codes book. They should have a copy present, or have them get back to you with the answer. Good Luck
Jason is absolutely right. Speak to Mary Goldie, she is nice and was helpful to me. I had the same question. The way the law is written it say wild game birds. I asked her how a captive bread pheasent could be considered wild and she asked some people and told me that it wouldn't. Her final answer with me was that captive breed and raised bird could be sold. Give her a call, I'm sure she will settle things for you.
Thanks everyone! I have spoken to Mary Goldie, and she is always so nice. She did tell me that I shouldn't sell pheasants, even if they are from a farm:( I will have to find some other way....Maybe if I breed them myself...I don't know, but there's gotta be a way!
