Acetone is a refined ketone - a biproduct of fat digestion produced naturally even within our own bodies. It has other more technical names but you likley won't find it listed as such. For your applications all you will likely need to know is what Old Fart posted above. It is a very powerful solvent that should be used in well ventilated conditions with no skin contact being made (wear chemical resitant gloves - butyle etc). Latex, vinyl and nitrile gloves are permeable to acetone and offer no protection.
It can also be found wherever you buy bondo (autoparts section of Wal Mart etc).
They have it cheap by the gallon.
Nail polish remover without the perfume! same thing.
also, a chemistry teacher did an experiment with us in class using
certain acetones- ever notice how they kind of smell like banana's?
bananas have the chemical property in them -acetones.
Tom, I think you are thinking of esters, a particular class of organic chemicals, not acetone.
