I searched the forum a bit on cleaning old bird mounts an found the brake drum cleaner method, is this the most effective method. Just want to double check its a customers mount and Ive never done it before? Also this bird is terrible looking and the customer wants the head to be straight, as of now it is turned into the wall and he would turn it to where he wanted it and then it would fall again when hung on the wall. But the skin is tore under feathers I think and when you turn the head to proper angle the feathers dont line up because I think it was mounted incorrectly in the first place. He paid 16.00 to have it done years ago. Is there anything I can do and is brake cleaner the best method of cleaning ? Thanks for any help, Hank

I likely gave that advice but had you read all of it, you'd have seen that using trichlorethylene tech 1,1,1 (brake cleaner) is just a Band Aid for an amputation. Feathers age and the barbs that hold the veins together deteriorate. An old mount is at the end of it's lifespan usually, and though brake cleaner is your best bet, it won't make the bird look like new again. It'll just be an old ratty mount that's been cleaned.
I mounted birds for $16 when I was getting started, over forty yeears ago.
