im doing a standing/alert jake, ive only done strutting toms before. question is, do most people use silicone throughout bird to set feathers like you would on the chest and back of a tom? or is that just one method? can it be done without ant caulk and left to dry naturally, but keeping an eye on it of course.

Yes and use what you like. I know Cally likes silicone on his commercial mounts. It will set up fast and can out the door faster. When it comes to a person who may be competiting or just learning and not sure of feather placement and likes to have some working time then they will use caulk. It's slower and gives you plenty of working time.
