A client has an ostrich enroute from South Africa. I am assuming the skin has been fleshed and salted.(yes I know about assume). Having never worked with salted skins what should I expect?
Must this skin be tanned or can I rehydrate and mount as a normal bird skin?
Yes I used the orange button but the archives do not address the tanning question.
Thanks
Fred

I am not sure what you mean by "mount as a normal bird skin". I hope you would tan every bird...That is a different dead horse argument. Rehydrate the skin with a little bacti-stat in the water then flesh good then tann. An extra large size bird should be tanned but yes Borax will work if you went that route.
Best of luck

And forget that its a bird. Treat it like a large animal, or better yet --- a dinosaur!
You will need to soak it in a salt and bacteriacide solution until it softens, and then you will have to get the fat off. Have fun.
No matter what you have charged, you probably won't think it was enough by the time you are finished.
