advice for ruffed grouse

i am doing a grouse for a freind of mine and i posed it drumming on a log it came out fair to good and i am not charging but it is far fromm competition quality. what do you look for in a quality bird and can i change anything once the bird starts to dry, i know this stuff could be in the archives but ruffie is drying and i have been looking for over an hour. any help would grreat.

in a quaility bird, I'm sorry, you can continue to preen {adjust} the feather placement for quite a while and I recommend doing so. Ruffs pattern lines up quite well. If you're drumming him and want the ruff to stand you can roll cotton and place under feather groupings or suspend entire mount upside down, pull ruff feathers down and let gravity help. Get some good reference pics and check yourself for detail, not much you can do about leg or wing placement but you can certainly preen the bird properly and make it as attractive as possible, good luck to you

i ll try it upside down, i guess i should have used the term competition. i would love to know where to find good reference pics. anyone out there with some?
