I get cotton in a carton from the local hair dresser, she uses it for womens hair setting and etc. It comes in a rope like about an inch in diameter, and loosely bound, can be separated to be thinner, Great for building up legs and wings, just wrap enough to rebuild the leg or wing, tie around with a bit of string and walla..... It's trade name is Cellucotton. If you have to pick apart q-tips for cotton, you will fall in love with this stuff.

Real Cotton

I have only mounted a few birds, but I prefer real cotton over polyester cotton like cotton balls and Q-tips. Cotton ball cotton is much too springy, and is difficult to mold. You can buy real cotton from Van Dykes(www.Van Dykestaxidermy.com), or look in the suppliers section of this site. Just get the cotton wet and it is easy to mold and it stays molded like that, then wrap with thread to hold in place. Wet cotton also lengthens the drying time, and reduces shrinkage. Hope this helps.
