I know since this is yalls profession and your living that yall will definately say have it mounted, but just yalls opinion, do you think getting a hooded merg. drake mounted is worth the money? i think he is a pretty bird but a lot of people think of them as trash ducks. Its just hard to decide because my local taxidermist charges $150 a bird and im only in high school so its a big investment. whats yalls input.

If you get a nice mount now you'll have the rest of your life to enjoy it and it will be a souvenior of your youth. Don't wait for things you want,if you can swing it,do it.

don't let people tell you hooded mergansers are "trash ducks". Tell them they are stupid - especially if same person shoots one. They are not great on the table but are beautiful birds to observe in the wild and when mounted. Mount your bird if you can to preserve the memory and provide a specimen to display. Once you do this, you will probably not shoot many (or any) more hoodeds, but I assure you that you will maintain a great appreciation for them and welcome them in your decoys when the "good" ducks aren't flying.

thanks

Want to know how many Mallards I have mounted?

This response submitted by John C on 2/28/05 at 10:55 PM. ( ) 70.178.74.104

1 yep only one, they are common as pennies, sure they have their good looking parts, but there are a lot of mallards, no big deal.

Funny how the "TRASH DUCKS" have the pretty colors.

A nice hoodie with the hood spread is awesome. I have several cinnamon teal, blue wings, green wings and woodies.

But those trash ducks are the best.

Yep I do have 2 pintials mounted. But I treasure the trash ducks.

Anyone want to give me their trash ducks?

They are all beautiful. Hooded Mergansers happen to be my favorite birds. They are the prettiest and they are neat birds to raise as well. Besides, if you think the bird is worth mounting, then nobody else's opinion matters.

Trash Ducks?

Its funny how the smaller, faster birds are called trash ducks. They're just mad because they aren't a good enough wingshooter to hit'em.

The big common mergansers are truly fish eaters and not many of us have them proudly displayed in our showcase. Fishermen would call them trash ducks. But look at one up close sometime and check out the lacy intricate patterns of the feathers or the bright red feet, eyes and bill(snout?) God must have had a special place for them because He gave them some pretty amazing colors and designs. The heads are interesting even on the dragon duck commons. Hoodies are right up there with wood ducks in my trophy cabinet and equally rare in my part of the world. Hope you take it to a very reputable taxidermist who will do you a show class job. If you love something very much it is called priceless...
