I just finished up fleshing my first bufflehead and now i know why they call them butterballs. I've seen some fat on birds, but this was ridiculous. Are they all this fatty or did I just get a real plump northern bird?

Just like other ducks. Sometimes they are real fat and other times hardly any fat. Good tough skin though more than makes up for it.
I,m from NW Indiana and we get alot of buffs and 100000% of the time they are always extra loaded with fat. But I love those little dudes so its worth the extra nastyness at the wheel.
I'm from Ca. and I've done more than a few and some have no fat at all.
Just think....they are like us, some get more exercise and burn off fat supplies and some of them don't! I know the feeling!
well, i'm from NC and most are very lean
