I have a customer who said he had a male and female coot that he wanted to have mounted, well it turns out that it is a grebe. Can I still legally mount it for him?
Thanks,
Shawn

dont you have your copy of the waterfowl regs? if you dont know dont take it in.
"no" what its not illegal or i cant mount it?, I thought it was a coot too beacause I never seen one. Are they a legal migratory bird. Sorry I cant find my regulations.
unless he has the proper paperwork from the feds.
You can mount it, yes, but only if it is legal for HIM to possess it and he can prove it AND you keep copies of his "PROOF" with the specimen at all times.
As a federally licensed taxi with a migratory bird permit, you are allowed to mount any bird so long as the person who brings the specimen can provide proof that he/she can legally posses it.
If your next door neighbor brings in a whooping crane which he honestly thought was a snow goose when he shot it, yet has no reason to posses the bird, then no you cannot mount the bird for him,
However, if Suzy Q brings in a Bald Eagle who works for the local museum and she has proper documentation such as Eagle allowance permits, as well as a current salvage permit, and the bird has been properly logged by USFW then you can mount it all day long...
I would recommed your customer either dispose of the bird, or donate the bird to a local museum or educational facility.
If you have already taken possession of the bird, 1st of shame on you... and 2ndly.. get rid of it ASAP. Without the proper papers you don't want to get caught with it.

General rule of thumb for the "average" taxidermist....If you can not shoot it, you can not mount it! Last time I checked Grebes were still on the "do not shoot" list. (for those that actually can identify waterfowl while hunting)
