Crazy Glue on the Eye

Submitted by Herb on 3/22/05 at 8:56 AM. ( authentic@wi.rr.com ) 69.23.215.144

I've only used cast heads a few times and I've had a hard time with the glue. The head that I used did not have glass eyes but rather acrylic or something. Of course I ended up getting glue on the eye and luckily not on the feathers. I searched the archives but I didn't find how to deal with the crazy glue on the eye. Any suggestions?

Thanks - Herb

What kind of super glue are you using? Gel is the way to go ,it doesnt run like the regular super glue.
If you do get glue on the eyes you can get it off with a paint brush and some acetone. Don't feel bad ,I've been doing birds for yrs now and still get glue on the eyes myself sometimes.

I used the regular stuff so the eye isn't looking so good at the moment.

Personally?

I like "HotStuff" liquid. In the Rinehart catalog you can buy great replacement tips for the bottles and they are almost syringe thin for applications. But maybe I'm the only one, but I never glue close to the eye anyway. I clay the eye and adjust it until dry OR I use an eye-ring and just lock it in over the ring.

Herb, Rinehart also sells a superglue solvent, but with an acrylic eye, it MIGHT JUST MELT IT. Don't know that much about the solvent.

Thanks for the responses

Maybe I'll try setting the eye skin in clay next time.

Thanks!

I would dremmel it down as far as you can go...

...then hand sand with a very tiny piece of sandpaper. Very carefully sand it down until it is gone. Don't worry if you sand the eye a bit. If you do, follow up with a 150 and then 220 and smooth it out. Then hit it with a laquer based gloss coat (mask off the area around the eye) and any scratch should disappear. Triple Thick works good...

Thanks again

Thanks Marty. I'll definitely give that a try!

Finger nail polish remover. It will take the glue off.

That's just diluted Acetone...

And I don't believe even acetone will remove hardened Super Glue. Super Glue remover (I forget the actual chemical name) removes Super Glue. You could try this on a "test eye" (with hardned Super Glue on it) to see if it eats the eye. If not use this. If it does eat it, go with dremmeling and sanding...

Not sure why you get glue on the eyes, when glueing skin to the cast head dont use it out of the tube, put some in a small clay cup(dine size) and apply it with a small pointed tool. the eyes dont need any glue on or around them...hope this helps
