Need Help Re: Pheasant Wattles

Submitted by Tereza on 4/15/05 at 8:32 PM. ( wingedcreations@yahoo.com ) 64.28.62.134

I've seen some very realistic ring neck pheasant wattles at the World Show specially in the Master Division. My method doesn't even come close to them, and I would like to improve mine. What or how to fill them with?

I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks

I am not the best at it myself but I can do a pretty respectable job. You need to cut a pocket in it all the way to the edge. Some will call it turning it to the edge but that is not the best way to describe it. It takes practice but just keep on trying. From the inside of the skin you can flesh it till you see the red coloration. Find the top under the eye and separate a pocket in it. Fill it with clay Mache or anything that will do the job. Remember slip to the bottom, sides, and the TOP. It aint easy!

Pheasant wattles

I usually fill it with sculpey but the wattles look thicker than the one I've seen at the World Show. Maybe there's another technique or filling that is used besides what I use or you use.

Thanks for responding.

Caulk

I have had some good success using caulking. After you have split the waddles patch any small holes that may be there including the ear holes. You insert the tip of the caulk tube through the eye and ingt the waddles and give it a squeeze. Do the same to the top of the head. This will give you a substance that will be easily mouldable and moveable. You first get the eyes set and shaped the way you want them. This will some what close the eye openings. Now you are ready to start moving the caulk around and mould it to your likings.
After the upper and the lower waddles are shaped to your liking you can take and back rake the tiny feathers that are covering them. Now you should have a nice full look with a nicely groumed head.

I hope this helps.

Silicone or Latex Caulk

That might be a great idea. That would explain why the wattles were thinner. Does it matter which caulkin to use: silicone or latex or mix?

Thanks!

I like the latex because if you get messy with it or forgot to plug a hole and it gets on the feathers, it cleans up very easily with acetone.
