Painting bird feet..

Submitted by TJ on 4/16/05 at 6:37 AM. ( ) 205.201.4.168

Is it necessary to way for the feet and beak to dry before painting? My spouse does all the painting for me, I'm admittedly terrible at painting, anyway, I was thinking we would have better success recreating the natural colors if we painted immediately after mounting instead of waiting for them to dry after they have darkened and lost their natural colorations..?
Also, does anyone have the phone # for Dixieland Supply?
Thanks
TJ

Not sure about the painting. I'd like to know myself. But the number for Dixieland is 901-465-2345 or 800-465-4577. I've talked to Willis a number of times, and he's very cool. Scott

Are you injecting your feet with anything to preserve them and keep them "plump"? If not, you should be, if so, depending on what you use, you can paint them right away. Many of the 2 part products harden in a few minutes to a couple hours.

You should wait

You should wait until the feet are dry. Otherwise, if the feet shrink any, the paint will crack. The method I prefer, is to use masters blend or fantastic cast to inject. Then, I wait a week until the feet dry and the color stabilizes. Then, I paint the feet. Work with light layers of color. I like to start most feet with a light to medium base coat of flesh...just enough so that the colors are even. Then, I begin applying my other colors lightly. You can always add more paint if you need to.
