Hello, I have a few turkeys (of my own) to mount this spring and I need a wire wheel. They are pretty expensive in the catalogs and it looks like it would be simple to build one. Am I missing something, or is it just that much better to buy one? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Steven, they are expensive, but worth every penny. I fought with other stuff before bought one. Wouldn't trade it for anything !
You can certainly build a machine, but you will not save anything if you factor in your time. Plus, if you buy one, all the trial and error is done for you.
On turkeys, I like to use the pressure washer on them. It works much better than the wire wheel, IMO. I know some folks who use a regular bench grinder on turkeys... If you use one, be careful because they are much more powerful than fleshing wheels.
Can you describe this method? I have never heard of using a pressure washer before. Thanks
I use a 2600 psi washer with a turbo tip. Cut the engine idle down til' it almost knocks off. Lay your skin on an incline piece of plywood and spray at an angle. Don't hold the spray in one spot too long... keep it moving. I also find it helpful to slice between the feather tracts with a razor blade...it opens them up and you can clean them easier.
I will have to try it.
