I am in need of some advise on geting ready for the turkey season. I am going to take on some turkeys this year. I was wondering how you all do this. Do you skin right away as they come in or do you freeze the hole bird to be done when the job comes up. I will be using freeze dried heads and was thinking I should atleast remove the heads as they come in. Also was thinking of removing the tails and preping them for mounting. I just may skin the birds and freeze only the skins. I only plan on doing 5-6 birds. Wondering what to do as I am only part time right now. Yes I am doing turkeys for the first time. I have only done a few ducks and upland birds. Thanks for any help in advance. Jack F

I prefer to skin immediately, prep the tail separately, and send all of the heads i collect off at the end of the season. People will advise you against it, and with good reason, but i hate to see a good eating bird go to waste, too.
With luck, you can time it so you have 6 heads, tails, and bases complete and supplies on hand at the same time... mount those birds all one looong weekend and be done with it-- Have your freezer unplugged within a couple months.
