Anybody see the OLN channel where Tred Barta is hunting geese with a longbow and fluflu arrows? Well they make their goose decoys by skinning the body out and then dumping a 4lb box of borax into the skin. Then a foam body is stapled in. A wire is worked up through the head and a metal frame is inserted for a stand. After sixty days they say the goose is hard as a rock and can be used in the field. And they've made 700 of these.
Anyone care to comment?

His eyes are brown from it. Here on the Eastern Shore (of the Chesapeake), "stuffers" are a way of life and have been for centuries. The "Barta way" is simply the cheap way to get "decoys" for about a season if there's not too much snow or rain. Then you throw them away as the rancid grease and mouse attraction make them unusable. Outfitters who use quality stuffers pay well for them and store them in metal trailers fitted to hold up to 500 stuffed Canadas.
He's a card isn't he? He's very passoniate at what he does, but I'll bet he rubs a lot of people the wrong way. I saw that show, it was good but as George said they're guys that have been doing this for years. We have a very rich developer up here that has tractor trailers on his property filled with stuffed geese, I know I've done some for him. No different with turkeys, I've hunted behind my own stuffed hens for 5 years now, I'd never go back to plastic, it IS that much better...
I'm sure he definitely rubs many folks the wrong way. I didn't like him at first with his arrogance. But he kinda grows on you. I like his show because it is interesting. Not the same ol, same ol. And, that cockiness really isn't all that when he backs up his mouth with results (most of the time)...
I think he gives hunting and fishing a bad name. Aside from the obvious of "Who is this jerk?", he's just another 'in your face' Jerry Springer. He must be over 60 (that or he was run hard and hung up wet too often) and then he takes his TEENAGE son on an elk hunt "using archery tactics" and regales how the kid gut shot a cow at 30 yards offhand. I find nothing about him entertaining or enlightening. And besides that, he has some of the worst taxidermy specimen you've ever seen. Look at that crap in his trophy room. He must mount his own the same way he mounted those decoys.
taking a flocking gun to the heads of regular plastic decoys than wasting your time to make something that is gonna rot. its not as good as stuffers, but Its more realistic than any other plastic decoy. and I feel that tred is about as good and level headed an advocate for hunting as ted nugent. A little tact and understanding goes a long way. If we as hunters get annoyed by him, think what the non hunters, no matter how open minded must think. to each thier own however.
"The probability that someone is watching you is directly proportional to the stupidity of your what your doing." This guy may start a new order in the outdoor world. Or has it already started?
...the episode where he stalked mule deer with a long bow. He injured and lost one animal and was taking "pot shots" at deer. Yes indeed, not a very good advocate for ethical hunters at times. I think Nuge is a much more ethical hunter - and a lot smarter than Tred. Perhaps the novelty of Tred will wear off in the near future for me?
..."and I feel that tred is about as good and level headed an advocate for hunting as ted nugent". I couldn't agree more. I havn't seen too many photo shoots with Ted Nugent and Wayne LaPierre shaking hands. I know Ted is an advocate for gun rights, but someone needs to take his gun away! I'm not a fan of Ted or Tred, but neither one try to hide their overzealous behavior, and for that you can't say their trying to be politically correct, and I can't stand when people act like pussies trying to please everybody.
He started the show out going off on actual PC Deer Hunters. Ya know the new thing where a guy can pull the trigger of a 30-06 over a computer on someones ranch. This is Bull Sheet, and thats what Ted was getting across that anyone who would do this is just lazy. I am a waterfowler and he had my undevided attention when he said he was going to go goose hunting with a bow. Thought it was a good episode. Also seen the one were his son shot a cow elk. Those are the episodes I've seen so far. Still beats watching the Gold Fever show. As for 700 stuffers someone must enjoy skinning geese more than myself.
I like the guy. I think he's probably abrasive so some folk, but I'd like to but the guy a glass of single malt and chat. I live in the same area as he, own a boat in Shinnecock. I think if there was more guys like us there'd be less PETA-heads around.
