broken neck

a friend brought me a mallard that fell off the wall. the skin around the neck and beak crack exposing the inside.(twine body) what would the best way to put it back together glue or a hide paste. the duck is approx 20 years old.

Give him a replacement bird from a game farm. If you replace it with a "new" bird, he'll think you are the "bomb" taxidermist, and refer you to all his buddies. You'll pay for that bird in no time!

Replacing it is fine but let him know. I could see this happening: telling all his friends what you did and now you have 20 people saying fix my broken neck. Are you going to fix it with replacement birds and not tell them I fixed them.LOL Go ahead and do this and also lose the shirt right off your back.
Replace them and charge them.


don't do a full replacement

ask him if he has another mallard in the freezer, or what are the chances of him shooting another next season. Cut the damaged head off at the neck ring, and replace it with the new head. You will probalby have to rehydrate the neck on the old mount, but that should be easy enough and much better than trying to rehydrate the whole bird.

I've seen this process done with great results.
