Turkey fan bowed backwards

Ok I just finished my first fan mount and when I put it on the plaque the tips of the fan touch the wall well before the plaque does. The fan would look real good if it was on a mount but it's not...

Is this a common problem? I proped the tail base up about 1 1/2" when I was drying and bondoing, I think I should have only proped it up about a 1/2". Any advise or tips would be appericated.

I'm going to try to dremmel all the bondo down and see if I can make it straighten out then bondo to rest it. Thanks!

Board

If that did not work I would probably try and build the rear board out more by using a thicker mounting board, or maybe lower the board on the fan more and allow the wall to hold the fan straight. I would also use a larger mounting bracket for the attachement on the wall like a level rite hanger. I know this is perfect, but at this point I wouldn't let all your time go to waste. I have had to make adjustments like this in the past as well. I would suggest drying the fan on a piece of matting board from Wal-Mart (poster board on steroids). That way when the fan is dry it is already flat for a wall mounting. Hope this helps, Stephen

Could it be the board or ...

Are all the plaques pretty much standard 3/4" boards or are there ones with a tail board that sits away from the wall more?

I was also told to dry the fan with the center slightly raised so it would have a bow back towards wall, so it would never bow away from the wall. Does that sound correct? Thanks again!

Smack the Bondo with a hammer.

More proof that Bondo is a filler and not an adhesive. LOL. It will shatter and you can remove it easily.

I always card and tape my fans down FLAT when I'm doing a display. I'm not looking for 3 dimensional effect on a fan mount, simply a display and I keep it flat. I like the caps that Van Dykes sells for turkey fans and I use Clear Paste from Epo-Grip to hold the quills in place once they're set. When the epoxy hardens, a hammer won't do anything to it except destroy the mount.

Thanks George!

I bought a cheaper plaque from Gander Mountain (Van Dykes?) just because I was anxious. I'm going to check around and see what else is out there. Thanks again!
