I normally get 7-10 birds in . This year I took in one and it's a tail mount. Ouch big time. Ohio had a good year too with a record number of birds killed.
Turkey harvest was down almost 100 birds per county in the northeast counties, which would add up to about 500 to 600 birds in a seven county area. I haven't seen as many birds in the last two to three years also. I don't know if it is due to the last three winters being somewhat harsh. I know the coyote population is doing quite well. While bowhunting I usually see at least one, every other time I go out.
2 years ago we had a horrible hatch here in Alabama. As a result, this year there were no 2 year old turkeys (the ones most people hear and harvest). I, and several other guides in my area took a total of about four 2 year olds out of about 30 turkeys. That's unheard of. A very reputable commercial hunting operation in our area normally takes about 70/year; this year they barely reached 30. We also had a very rainy turkey season here and much cooler temperatures than normal. Naturally the result was a drastic decrease in overall harvest. I've heard the same reports from Mississippi and Missouri. I took in significantly more turkeys in my shop, but I think it's due to the fact that I've only been mounting turkeys for about 5 years and this was my first year full time. So, I really don't have a fair comparison to previous years' intake.
I have hunting turkeys for 10 years in ohio every year there seems to be less turkeys but I always seem to get my two birds?I got two turkeys in plus mine thank GOD for deer!KIM
