Replacing bird eyes question

Submitted by Scott Olson on 6/16/05 at 4:24 PM. ( scpol@owc.net ) 69.64.131.188

What would be the best way to replace the eyes on a duck thats already
mounted. I have a guy who had a duck done by someone else, and he put
red eyes in a goldeneye. Could you rehydrate around the eyes, and pry
them out, and replace? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Scott Olson

If they're put in with epoxy, it won't work. If it's clay, you need to CAREFULLY inject warm water with an insulin needle around the eye for several hours. When the clay becomes soft to the needle, wet it a few more times and then see if the skin has any elasticity. If not, you're done and need to blow dry the head. If it stretches, take a long pin and carefully work the lid up on one side, lift the eye up and let it come though the lids as a slot. Then insert the replacement eye and lay the lid back in place. Let it dry naturally and gently fluff the feathers with a blowdryer.

It sure would have been easier with flex eyes. LOL

Thank You George

Thank you very much for the information. I will try that. He's a new
customer that i just did a woodie for, and wanted to help him out. Who would put red eyes in a GOLDEN eye anyways! Scott Olson

Maybe the Goldeneye smoked some "Duckweed"! Maybe you could try an easier route, try Visine! Sorry couldn't resist, ya what George said!
