Asking for help with a men's health study

Submitted by James Mahalik, Ph.D. on 6/28/05 at 4:42 PM. ( mahalik@bc.edu ) 151.204.254.254

Do you wonder why men die before women?

Did you know that men die at higher rates than women from all 10 of the leading causes of death?

Do you know that research trying to find out why men die earlier does not include adult men from different backgrounds from across the country?

My name is Dr. James Mahalik and I am a researcher at Boston College examining men's health issues. I am contacting men to ask them to take a 25-30 minute, anonymous, on-line survey. I've designed the study so that you can answer it at any time of the day or night in the privacy of your home or another place by clicking on the url below:

https://www.psychdata.com/surveys.asp?SID=7938

The goal in this study is to learn more about influences on men's health in order to help men live longer and healthier lives. Research on these issues has been criticized for not including adult men from a broad range of backgrounds and ages. So without understanding the experiences of men like you, work on men's health remains very incomplete.

Your participation is entirely anonymous. In the study, you will not be asked to give any identifying information (e.g., name, town, address). Your decision to take part in this study is voluntary. You will not be contacted in any way following your participation in the survey. You will not be asked to buy anything or to sign up for any membership. You are only being asked to complete the on-line survey and nothing else.

Thank you for your willingness to consider participating in this survey. If you have any questions, please contact me at Mahalik@bc.edu. Also, if you are interested in receiving results from this study, please send me an e-mail to at Mahalik@bc.edu and ask for a summary of the studies findings when complete (about 1-2 months).

Our health vs. womens health

I am not a Dr. yet I use scalpel to intricatley open fish and mammals. I am not a lawyer yet I give free legal advice, I am not a fireman yet I am still able to extinguish my wife's fire. But I would say that if men bled a few days a month then we would live longer also. A monthly cycle of the woman is good for getting rid of wastes that is harmful to us all. Along with the one most important thing or food that a woman really needs.is "chocolate" because of the high iron content that she needs to keep replenished from month to month. I just had to add that, Sorry Dr. I think what you are doing is good. Keep up the good research. Cause I do not want to die yet for awhile.

I bleed too.

I bleed more than a few days a month. It just depends on how much I use that scalpel!

about men being the stronger sex

This response submitted by birdgirl on 7/1/05 at 5:09 PM. ( ) 204.119.21.71

I just dont think men start life out even as a stronger sex because when I was pregnant, and took childbirth classes a pediatric nurse told me that almost every time they had a sick baby born it was almost always a boy. When I hear of women losing a baby or miscarriages, it is almost always a boy.I think the XY chromosome is a weaker link with more genetic problem than the XX.I have a daughter and came from a family of daughters and none of us ever have had any serious illnesses or deaths.Yet I lost my dad at a very young age and have had sick cousins that were boys.
