Who makes the best flesher for turkeys?

Submitted by Steve on 7/5/05 at 9:42 PM. ( ) 205.188.117.6

I have a homemade flesher that works well for ducks, and gets me by on a few turkeys a year. Took in more turkeys than usual this year and I want to buy a better flesher to be used mainly on turkeys. Looking for suggestions and opinions. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

Try doubling up the wire wheels. It'll speed things up a bit. What problems are you having? There are some on here that use a pressure washer with good results-- maybe invest in that.

pressure washer is the only way to fly

I have tried both the wheel and the washer and have gotten equally messy. P washer is about 700 times faster.

I think I would go for the pressure washer

I have on the new-angles fleshers. I skinned the turkey with no holes. Then after the flesher, it looks like swiss cheese. They I figure it I can not do worse.

Pressure washer

We just started fleshing with a pressure washer about 3 months ago and I have been very pleased with the results. I used to (and still use sometimes on tough thin fat) use a drill with a wire brush, I place the turkey on my fleshing beam and get the tough stuff off and then finish up with the pressure washer. Most of the time you can do the whole bird without the wire brush. I don't know that it is any faster but it is a whole lot cleaner. When using the pressure washer you just blow all the fat and meat off and out of your way, it makes washing the skin a lot less of a hassle. I have been playing around with fleshing small mammals with it too. I used to use the drill on turkeys, geese and small mammals, but now I only use it on geese. As far as speed goes it takes about the same amount of time to flesh with the pressure washer as it does with the drill ( about 15 minutes).

Are you saying you can flesh a turkey in 15 minutes? I'll be the first to admit that I am no speed demon, but 15 minutes is pretty awesome! Are they clean? I mean really clean?

15 Minutes

I am not including the time it takes to clean the meat off of the drumsticks or the meat out of the wings, just the amount of time it takes to flesh. And yes they are clean, nothing but quills left. You do have to be carefull or you can blow a hole, the good thing about the pressure washer is if you do blow a hole you don't end up with funky turkey fat all in the feathers. I have mounted quite a few birds though and I wasn't able to flesh them that fast when I started, It usually doesn't take me but about 10 to 15 minutes to flesh a duck either, but give me a deer cape and it takes me 2 1/2 hrs.

A wire wheel on a drill? I would think that would be extremely messy with fat flying everywhere. On another note, has anyone used a pressure washer on a duck? Just wondering.
