bird attachment question

Submitted by Steve D. on 7/9/05 at 7:29 PM. ( ) 65.69.51.30

I am mounting a Gadwall in a flying pose for a pedestal mount. My problem is that I have only done one other 360 degree bird mount and it had two points of attachment. The bird will be attached from his back to a branch as he is flying by. What is the best way to anchor the 8 gauge wire from the bird into the tree? The drill bit for that diameter wire will only allow me to drill about 3" into the branch. I had an issue last time with the bird wanting to swivel so I had to use two attachment points. It looked fine, but this time there will be no other place to go to if the single point doesn't work. If anyone has any suggestions or proven methods your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve D.

Bend it in a double "L" configuration

Then rout the limb down to accept the leg of the "L". At the end of the routed channel, drill your hole to accept the foot of the "L". Now staple across the leg of the "L" into the channel and cover with Apoxie Sculpt or clay.

Another way

Since a number 8 wire is about 1/8 inch in diameter, you can buy a drill bit thats 12 inches long and drill the hole you wanted in the first place to attach the bird. I have 4 drill bits of various diameters that are 12 inches long and wouldn't be without them. You can buy them at most hardware stores and they're not very expensive.Good luck....JL

Or....

You can take a long section of the 8 gauge wire, cut the end into a point, and put the wire into the drill. The section of wire acts like a very long drill bit, and works pretty well. I have done this many times, and it does work! If the hole you drilled is snug and your duck's wire will not fit through, you can cut a section of 6 gauge wire and drill that through the hole you just made (this widens it a little, making it easier to accept your duck's wire.) This is much less expensive than buying long drill bits:o)

Thanks for your help. This gives me several ideas to try out.

I just have to say...i tried using those homemade wire drill bits before. they worked fine until they gave way, bent, and cut my hand in more than a few places...oops! the 12" bits from the store seem to do a better job (now that i learned my lesson)
