Just curious if anyone knows if the feds do any type of background check, any investigation at all, or is the permit merely a tax. I've never heard of anyone ever being denied and I've never heard of any known investigations prior to approval.

But I do think they cross reference you with other migratory bird permits.. For instance, I do not think that you are allowed to posses a federal MB taxidermy permit if you are a holder of a scientific collection permit.
I may be wrong, but I do think I have read some regs along those lines in 50 CFR.
