Frank Newmyer Apex Duck Heads

Submitted by Eric on 7/13/05 at 8:53 PM. ( ) 68.217.250.3

I'm pretty new to waterfowl taxidermy. I've used Wayne Cooper flex eyes, which I had good success with. Then I tried Newmyer's Apex heads with the preset eyes. I seem to have some trouble getting the eyelids to tuck in behind the artificial lids, or ring. It seems like there is not enough "lip" to tuck the skin behind, which also makes it hard to make the light down feathers disappear. Also, the eyes themselves seem to be set into the skull a bit too deep, making the eyes appear to be "recessed" into the feathers. Any tips for me? Thanks alot!

Frank won't like this

But I take my brain spoon and dig out all that soft foam inside the shell of the head. Then I pour Por-a-cast into the void and make it good and solid. Then I take my Dremel and rout out a deeper groove under the eye ring. Works for me.

I also used those

I used the Apex heads on a widgeon.gw teal, and woodduck and didn't like the results, now I use bird heads by Stefan Savides w/preset eyes out of Research Mannikins with great success!
I highly recommend them.
Just my 2 cents.
Rick
