I have a question concerning tumbling mixes. I have always used puffed borax in a 30 gallon tumbler with excellent results as far as drying and fluffing both birds, animals and deer heads. I have searched the archives concerning corn cob and have purchased a 50 lbs bag of grit o cob. I put 10-15lbs in the tumbler and had very good results with a coyote I did but even though the fur was dry and fluffy, the grit stuck to the skin. On smaller animals I use dry preserve. My question is : will the grit atract insects and will the dry preserve work even with grit on the skin. Also will the grit stain light bird feathers. So far I like the puffed borax better but at the price $39 a ten pound bag I'm looking for a better and cheaper way. Any help wouuld be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

It won't attract bugs as it's cob grit, not the grain itself. I too use DP on small animals and I'm used to that. I simply blow the excess off with shop air, DP and then mount.
Is there enough difference in the Puffed Borax and the old 20 mule team borax to justify the price differenc? Puffed is $38 plus shipping from WASCO for 10 lbs. 2 boxes of 20 Mule Team is about $5 and no shipping.
Thanks George, wasn't sure if it would hurt the dp process. Also, does the grit stain anything tumbled light in color? Robbie, I havent tried the 20 mule team because its much coarser and thought that the object of puffed borax was to dry and fluff. Now that you mention it, corn cob grit is coarse also. Maybe someday as an experiment I'll try it. For now, I have enough grit and I like the way it fluffs the hair and feathers.
Thanks again,
Mike
but i wanted to say that i myself have used the mule team borax now for a couple years and have had great results. Also as far as tumbling I have found that diatomacious earth has great absorbing quality. It seems to stick alittle more than other products but with a shop vac that's easily solved.
