I use white laytex caulk you get at the hadware store.toothpaste consistancy.works great on turkeys and waterfowl.
I use siliconized caulk - not silicone. I use a lot of it, so I buy the DAP brand from Wal-Mart. I've noticed in Cally's and Rick Morris' articles, the photos show them using the same. If you use the silicone, it'll set up really quick. And, if you don't have all of your feathers in place, you can imagine what a pain you're in for.
was at the WTC and used 100% silicone on his demo turkey. He says it will kick off in 15 minutes. He also said he had mounted several thousand turkeys so I guess getting feathers in place in 15 minutes is no issue to him---BIG issue to most of us.
I have had problems with some caulks that seem to creat a dry slug at the beginning of the wing and then it takes forever for the rest of the caulk to dry. Liquid nails is that way. When it does dry the wing is solid at a rock, but the time for it to set up is a pain. I would think that pure silicone would be just as bad. I dont know because I have never used it. I will stick with acrylic caulk because I know it works.
At the WTC Cally pinned and preened all the feathers in place where he wanted them. Then he made a small incision to insert the long tube that was glued on the tip of the cauking. Move the tube where you want the caulking to be. When you're done, spread the caulking with your hand. You apply the caulking in an area one at a time and fix the feathers as you go. Be careful not to smear any silicone caulking on the feathers. You won't be able to remove it. I used 100% silicone with my first turkey and it turned out well. I am going to try it with ducks and pheasants. If the video from the WTC is available for sale, buy it. It contains a lot of information to learn from. If you're doing a strutting turkey, caulk the back last. He mentioned this to me when he was marking my model turkey.
