super glueing holes

Submitted by Scott on 8/7/05 at 1:12 AM. ( ) 65.131.141.203

I know this subject has been hammered on this site, but I've gone through the archives and still have this question. How dry does the skin have to be to glue it together? I have a small hole in the wing, between the wrist and elbow, and would like to super glue it so I can use caulk in the wings. This will be my first attempt at both glueing holes and using caulk. Any advise would be apprecieated.

As dry as possible..

Scott,

Just use a papertowel and dab it dry then glue. Superglue can be glued under damp conditions and hold fairly well. If you want an accelerator sprinkle on borax right after you glue, it will kick in 2 seconds..

Why don't you sew it?

I stay away form superglue on birds except on the artificial heads. That stuff can become brittle later and it will surely burn feathers if it comes into contact with them. I'd sew it up tight and the caulk won't be any problem.

Latex Glove

One of our past bird judges said to cut a small section of latex glove and super glue it over the hole. Never tried but can't hurt to try.
