HELP! bugs in turkey wings (lice or fly) don't really know

Submitted by Coach on 9/5/05 at 11:19 AM. ( ) 64.12.116.200

Hey guys,

The first time I have gotten either fly or lice larvie in the wings of my strutting turkey. I noticed it this morning while I wa in the shop, little white and brown maggots under side the wing at the joints. This time I fleshed them (which I thought) really well. But here they are 1 week after I set it out to dry.

I paniced and grabbed some ant killer pulled out the wings and sprayed it really well. Took a brush, and brushed all that I could see away. Then brought back the ant killer and sprayed some more. Left it for an hour, and they are falling out on the base.

I am thinking about putting the bird in a leaf bag, and setting off a bug bomb. What do you think? Or should I just give up?

The good thing is that this is a family bird and not a real customer. So I could explain it and I know there would be no hard felings. But I want to save it if possible.

ALos, used liqua-cure

Also I used Liqua-cure to preserve the turkey skin.

Borax

Just from what I have heard, the liqua cure is the problem. You should have used Borax. I know for a fact that George Roof swears by Borax and does not care for liqua cure at all.

Yea, I know but where do I go now?

Yea, for some reason this time I did not rub borax in the joint area like I normally do. I thought since I done such a better job fleshing it, and left less joint tissue than normal, the liqua-cure would be ok. Well, I guess I was rong.

I did go back pull out the wing, and soaked in in hot shot fly killer. I will probably go back tommorrow and inject preserve in the joints. but do you all think this is a lost cause?

I guess George is right, Liqua-cure is not the best thing.

I think you are panicking for no reason

I hate to think what kind of residue may be on the feathers from all of that bug spray.

Just part the feathers, cut a little slit over the offending area and pack some borax into it. Seal the cut w/super glue and call it done. Maggots can't live without moisture and the borax will dry up any excess.

Live and learn. We've all done something that didn't work out at one time or another.

Thank you

Thanks Nancy, I cut open the bad area. The bug spray killed all the bugs. Then I rubbed borax, all area. Injected Preserveit in to all areas that would still accept it. and closed the incision up. Looks like new. Things should be ok now.

Thanks for the advise. I really appreciate it.

Rob
