turkey tails

some times when i tumble a turkey skin the ends of the tail feathers gets frayes in them,is it bets to cut the tail off and replace after you mount it? also is the a way to straighten the ends of the tail feathers

I've never tumbled a tail in my life. I cut them off. If they are messy, hose them off and fluff them with shop air.


Dry on high heat

I, also, always remove the tail. Not only does it get in the way when tumbling, but you can bondo the tail and if the position doesn't turn out like you like, you can break it apart and do it again. With the tail attached, your skin would be drying out during all of this, plus the risk of bondo on feathers, etc. As for straightening the feathers out, blow dry them on high heat. I don't understand what goes on there, but the heat seems to straighten quills and pull the feathers back together better than anything else. Make sure they're washed well - clay and body fluids will certainly prevent them from ever coming back together.
