Cally Morris Turkey System?

Was thinking of trying Callys turkey body the next time I mount a turkey.I read on the McKenzie website were he uses smooth rolled steel then threads the ends for the washers and nuts. Could you not just use threaded stock all the way up, because It is really not that much higher and I do not have the stuff to thread the smooth steel. The only drawback I can possibly see is when you bend the top piece at a 90 degree bend to push it into the form at the top of the leg. That threaded stock is pretty soft and might break. Was just curious if anyone had tried this before I waisted my money on the threaded stock. Thanks

I use the threaded kind. No problems here. BP

It will break Thats why I use the smooth steel and thread it

Been there and done that, The threaded rod will break if you go a full 90 degree. So you can go a little less. But I would recommend that you use the 3/16 rod, and thread it after you are done.

The die cost 3.00 so at NAPA, or 6.00 for Snapp-on. the snap-on guy would not call me back so I when to NAPA.

Again, just my comments.

Thread stock is very brittle and any flexing will cause it to break. Additionally, imagine pushing a piece of thread stock down the leg bone versus a smooth piece of rod stock that has been sharpened. Use standard 1/4 stock and buy you a 1/4 x 28AST die to cut the threads with.

Thanks For the Info!

Another option

I have anchored many birds from pheasant up to rhea on flat surfaces without threading or even drilling into the base. What I do is have plenty of wire coming out of the bottom of the feet and I bend it into a triangle that lies flat on the base, the bird is standing on the wire. I then staple the triangle in place and then I slip some wax paper under under the feet and then I pour foam on the triangle. It locks it down solid and you can have it on a thin base. If you want to see pictures of some examples e-mail me. Also on my web-site there is a picture of a Merriams turkey mounted this way. www.BreckDickinsonTaxidermy.com

p.s. When you bend the triangles point them in opposite directions the one from the other.

Guess I should clarify

I don't bend my rods. I use Cally's forms that have the drumsticks molded in. I use electrical tape to tape the rod(which is cut even with the end of the bone) to the drumstick bone. Then use 2 cheap hangers as straps to fasten the rod/bone to the form, then bondo over that. BP
