skinning birds?

I was wondering if you could skin a bird through its back instead of the breast? Has anyone done this and how much more work is it?

But why would you want to? Its a bunch easier to hide if you do it through the breast. The feathers on the back are tough to make look good doing it that way. All my breast out mount are skiined through the breast and you cannot see the cut at all.

....Dorsal cut as opposed to the normal ventral cut. Yes, you can do it. For my money it doesn't cover as well as the ventral cut does, the feathers don't lay right and are thinner on the backs of waterfowl. I've never used it on an upland bird. If it was better don't you suppose it would be the norm?

yes it can be done

and it really is no more difficult than a ventral incision.

The side cut is the winner

Especially on birds with closed wings.

Feather placement

In my opinion if you did the dorsal cut your just asking for problems with correct feather placement. You can cut on the bottom, on the side, or on the top. But what would give you the best results with little problems? The ventral cut.

Depends

on the bird and the pose, I dorsal cut almost all my turkeys, & geese and any bird that the pose will be easier to work with.
