Mounting seaducks

Quick question for any of you guys who mount these concerning pinfeathers. My personal experience/mounts are predominantly puddlers and geese; am quite familiar with pinfeathers on early season birds (as discussed on a recent thread). Been talking with some coastal guys (on duck hunting forums) who will be chasing seaducks soon (mostly scoters and oldsquaws); some seem to be going only to get mounters. I assume pinfeathers are a problem for these also this early in the season, but as I have zero experience with em, I was hoping to get some info or confirmation from the pros.

You guessed it. I've taken birds in early and late Dec. on the east coast and Late Dec. on the west. Got varying results but have always had some with pin feathers. They are still mountable though. Jim

Jim, the guys I am talking about will be killing these birds this weekend! Have you dealt with any October birds? Your post implied you were talking about December birds.

They will be full of pin feathers... You can guarantee that they will turn out looking like crap. Just my $0.02

How bout those collected around November 11? That's when I'm going to Maine.
