Hello.
I was wondering if there are any legalities that should be observed when picking up and tanning/plucking small birds (house sparrows, mourning doves, etc) that die from hitting windows.
-Much thanks!

(In Illinois).
house sparrows, rock doves (the normal pigeon which are desedent from feral pigeons), starlings and anything you can find in a pet store are the only birds you can do without any licences. everything else that dosn't have a hunting season are illegal.
I ment english sparrow.. I think house sparrow and english sparrow is the same, no?
Much thanks.
Where could one find out whether or not a particular bird is legal? Also, does this mean that exotics that one can purchase are legal as well? (No.. I solemnly do swear that I have no intent to skin the local iguana.)
look up dnr cities I think... It should give you a list. I have a list but I don't know the web site I found it on. or you can email dnr or write to them and they will send you a list. If you can buy it in a pet store they'd be legal. However If you were to buy something from somebody (or pet store) to do taxidermy make sure you let them know what your planning on doing with it, otherwise you can get sued for... buying on false intentions? I don't think thats the right terms but you get the point.

Any native Bird except a starling, European sparrow, and the feral pigeon are protected and cannot be possessed. Game Birds can be possessed but not sold. Every thing else is out of the question. They are protected by the US Fish and Wildlife Migratory Bird Act. You can find the act by doing a google search for it.There is a list of every species it protects. which is pointless in this case since it is all of them.
Best regards,
Mike
