I just finished a gobbling on the roost turkey tonight. While working I noticed what looked like a small waxworm(not sure what maggots look like) fall right under the back of the wood. Thats when I noticed about 10 of the brown(dead) little guys on the floor. The bird had been mounted for 4 weeks before attached to the wood one week ago(never noticed any before that). The freshly cut walnut slab/branch was brought in one week ago. I did my absolute damnest to get every bit of meat/fat out of that bird, there is no smell to him. I'm guessing they come out of the wood. Anyone ever experienced this? I combed through the feathers and underneath the wings of the bird and none fell out. What would you recommend. Raid the hole thing? I was just ready to send this bird out, and the customer loves it.

How can you not know what a maggot looks like , come on ? Maggots are white . If the worms you found are brown and fairly fresh , then they are a larva of a wood boring beetle . If they are dried then maybe maggots . You will only get maggots this time of year if you are in a warm state . Flies hibernate in colder areas . Do a search for maggots on your computer to see what they look like . Rick
Use them for trout/pan fishing, they work great.. Ryan is there any dead decaying spots in the wood? That's where they would be, I also doubt they're from your mount. They need moist wood to live and yours is probably starting to dry out, if it was fresh cut. There are pesticides that will kill them, go to a farm store or maybe a big box store they'll have something. good luck
