Duck Skinning

Submitted by Jim on 12/11/05 at 11:29 AM. ( jerogers@insightbb.com ) 12.223.146.77

It seems that everytime I skin and work on a duck,,the skin on either side of the vent rips. It doesn't happen during the skinning, it usually happens when I am removing the fat. I try to be gentle, but it happens anyway. Anyone have any suggestions? Am I making my stermun cut too close to the vent? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Using Borax

during the skinning and fleshing phase seems to toughen the skin, but it is just a difficult area no matter what. Ending the incision an inch before the vent may help also.

Cut through the vent

Cut through the first ring of tissue on the vent Jim. Basically, end your cut IN the vent. The vent tissue will prevent tears during skinning, fleshing, washing and mounting.

Thanks

I'll try extending the cut into the vent. I already use borax when I am skinning. Thanks for the help.
