Paint thinner disposal

Was wondering how everyone gets rid of their paint thinner and lacquer thinner? Didn't see anything in the archives. Also, does anyone (who uses thinner to soak birds) have a good way to remove the water and oil other than letting it settle and pouring of the clean thinner on top. Just looking for a way to recover more thinner. Thanks

Then stop using it

The archives are full of warnings of that stupid "thinner on birds" bit. If you're using it for paint and use a paint booth AS YOU SHOULD, it'll simply evaporate it when it's sprayed throught a bush.

If you insist on using that method I have a suggestion. I sadly obtain alot of waste materials in my trade. I contract paint for a living. I GIVE all my waste product to a man w/an oil burner. He heats his auto repair shop w/it. The thinners are welcome at his shop as it cuts the oil he burns and helps w/the sludge. I also take all my oil changes and he appreciates the heavy Bike oil that we get. Id start by asking the garages whos burning what? They often have the burners here because of our climate and their infinite supply of waste oil. Hope it helps good luck

George - the question

What do you clean your paint bottles, etc with? It sounds like you use lacquer paints. I looked in the archives prior to my inquire and found that many people us paint thinner to displace the water on birds before drying. It is pretty common. Didn't see any big warning. Do you have an answer for any of the questions asked?

I use Redi-Caps and pins and keep certain colors stored in them. As for my mixing cup, I use lacquer thinner IN THE SPRAY BOOTH as well as flushing the brush with a lab bottle of the stuff.

contrary to your assertion, using volatiles to "displace water" IS NOT COMMON. People are quickly learning to be smarter than that and evolution (actually attrition) is taking care of the ones who aren't. Use soap and water, spin dry, blow dry, and tumble. A bag full of sawdust is much cheaper than the ER bill or the shop burning down.
